Child Discipleship: 2015 – You Can Change Lives

As many of you know this has been a difficult year for Joe and me – including his being hospitalized for the past month. With many complications, I have not had the time to send a year end letter to supporters.

Now that it’s the 21st Century I am using my Blog and Facebook to tell you, my supporters – and those who are led to help, how the Triune God is using KidTrek – Sunday Plus to significantly touch the lives of children and adults.

Here are three glimpses of how KidTrek-Sunday Plus is making a difference…

 STORY ONE

sarahchildWhat do you do with a bunch of 6-10 year olds with English language challenges, learning disabilities, and emotional issues due to poverty and even trauma? How do you share God’s word with them? Through Kid Trek’s Sunday Plus after school material, our church based after school program has been able to bring the Word to LIFE for these precious ones.

Wanda has worked with every type of kid and writes her material to engage their minds, hearts, and hands. Every lesson is different and has been clearly prayed over and deeply thought over. I have treasured our two year journey through the old and new testaments. Especially unforgettable was the lesson where we taped up a huge 9 foot goliath and at the end of the lesson we took it down and all the kids got to STOMP on him! As they relished the tactile experience, I just prayed that they would approach their own challenges with such faith and boldness. The boys especially loved that lesson.

Also, I appreciate the commitment of the curriculum to memorizing and meditating upon Scripture. Kids in our center often reference the ten commandments now when discipline issues arise. I love that this is part of their conversations! Wanda has worked closely with me in tailoring the material to the needs of our kids and time constraints of the program. Because of her thoughtful curriculum, we are able to be intentional about our call in Deuteronomy 6  to talk about God’s word while we are sitting and walking by the road as we mentor these kids. The themes are incorporated into every aspect of our time with them from snacks, to games, to bible time. I just want to thank Wanda for having such a legacy among our kids and staff in downtown LA!

Pondering Goliath

“I get it!” are three words we hear regularly when using KidTrek on Sunday mornings.  The Reality Check, Chat ‘n Chew, games and activities all work together not only to teach God’s Word and keep the kids engaged, but to make them really think and internalize spiritual truths.

Wanda encouraged us to make this curriculum our own, and we have definitely felt comfortable doing so.  I have to say though that it’s a good idea to try her suggestions verbatim at least once, because you may be surprised at the results!  Who knew that wads of gum on a bulletin board would get everyone talking, or that suggesting a kid come to church with clothes on inside-out would make him understand how Noah stood alone to obey God?

 STORY THREE

Tijuanan children wait in line to go to the store.

We would like to take the time to thank Wanda for the KidTrek curriculum. It is a great blessing to our children. Since using it, we have seen a great improvement with the children’s attendance. They have been more consistent in being there every Tuesday and Sunday, because they are very motivated with the club dollars and the club store. Most of these children don’t have much resources because they live in Tijuana as a result the club dollars has also been a great tool of motivation for them to memorize scripture.

TijuanastorePrior to using Sunday Plus they would really struggle to memorize scripture,  but now about 90% of the children are memorizing the monthly memory verse and are starting to apply it to their lives. Francisco was not very social and his attendance was sporadic.  Now he is always in every small group meeting and thrives on being part of the children’s group. The curriculum is a great blessing to these children. Please continue to pray for us, that we will have the strength to help and be a blessing to these children in Tijuana.

About Wanda

I have worked with children and families for over 40 years in both secular and Christian settings. • Following college I joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) and served in a migrant labor camp in Texas. • After VISTA I married Joe Parker. Joe was a Boy’s Club Director and we served in several inner city and barrio areas in So. California. • I served as Children’s Director and Family Pastor in three Orange County Churches. During this time I was a co—founder of CCMA • Right after the Los Angeles riots, and while serving as Family Pastor at Mariners Church in Newport Beach, Campus Crusade approached me to develop a reproducible ministry to reach children in inner city areas of America, known today as S.A.Y. Yes! Centers of America. • In 1998 I was invited along with 25 others, representing every continent of the world, to be part of a symposium in England. This was the initial gathering for the creation of a curriculum to equip people working with children living in difficult circumstances. Celebrating Children is taught today in Christian universities around the world. • In 2001 KidTrek was begun, a unique ministry to equip the Church to disciple children. Married for 47 years, I have three married children and eight grandchildren who walk with the Lord. The greatest gift a mother could ever have.

One Response to Child Discipleship: 2015 – You Can Change Lives

  1. Sorry my story is late to be added to this, but I am a living testimony of the impact of Kidtrek and it’s founder Mama Wanda Nelson Parker. From October 2009 when I sat under her for Training, Mama Wanda has strengthened my passion to live and do ministry work the Bible way. At a time when Ministry looks more like a social assignment which must be filled with fun, fun, fun, she insists on aligning ALL WE SAY AND DO with the WORD OF GOD. This is how I describe her in my own words; “to Mama Wanda, IT’S EITHER BIBLE AL OR STOP IT”. And I dare say, your kind are not many today. This strong “principle” of your’s has been a strong encouragement to me.

I remember during my training in Pasadena, CA, under you, whenever there was a suggestion/contribution which sounded a bit off the bible, even when it appeared to be fun, you asked if there was a scripture backing for that. And your humility, you accepted all that we could explain in context of God’s Word. You made me strong in my desire to do and see things in line with Scripture, even when it doesn’t come out popular most of the time and I sound controversial. You taught me to seek quality as against quantity. Thank God for your life.
